Direct debits are an interesting animal, but sometimes bite your hand. Mine was bitten the other day, actually…
After switching bank accounts, I rang my local gym to change over my direct debit. Two months later, I find out the old (unused) account has been debited regularly the whole time, as well as the new account! Double-dipping! Chasing the gym management about this has proved irritating, and I sense I’ll really have to lean on them to get my money back. Grrr.
Working in a bank, I’d met loads of people with this same issue, usually because gyms mostly use a third-party company to perform the debits. This adds more moving parts into the mix. Let me say, direct debits for the most part make my life easier. Personally, I love having things very UN-fiddly. My insurances, internet, phone, etc are debited smoothly each month. It’s usually the dreaded gym direct debit to watch for. I’m contemplating just cutting the whole membership loose, actually.
Have you had this happen?
